2008-2009 statistics released by the Information Centre today show that the number of women of all ages having cervical screening has increased to 3.7 million compared with 3.4 million last year, an increase of 10.5 per cent (around 353,000). Those within the 25 to 64 age range have risen to 3.6 million from 3.2 million last year, an 11.9 per cent increase (around 384,000). The majority of this increase is for women aged 25 to 49. It is thought to be due to the publicity surrounding the illness and death of Jade Goody.
