In this review we report the results of screening the 3.2 million women who take advantage of the Programme. We also report on the work of the statisticians 'behind the scenes' who help us produce useful information from all the different data items the Programme generates.
This review describes the working relationship between the NHS Cervical Screening Programme and the cancer registries which enables us to look at the outcome of all this activity. We can then judge whether we are being effective in our overall objectives of preventing cervical cancer and deaths from cervical cancer in the English population.
We reflect on the changes of the last 30 years in investigation and management of women with abnormal smears and look to the future for colposcopy. We also describe how a joint project with the NHS Breast Screening Programme and Cancer Research UK will inform us in the future by considering the influences of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), oral contraceptives and the changing lifestyle of women in their 50s and early 60s.
