This booklet is a guide to the main issues that should be considered when introducing a computer into a cytopathology laboratory for the first time, and is a memory aid for those replacing or expanding an existing system. It concentrates on the requirements of the cervical screening programme since these include the main specific requirements of cytology and go beyond those of a purely laboratory system. The core system described in this booklet is suitable for other areas of cytopathology and some of the proposals, for example failsafe routines, can be adapted to "non gynaecological" cytology and associated biopsy histology.
