Communicating risk information about breast and cervical cancer and cancer screening to women from minority ethnic and low income groups

The NHS Cancer Screening Programmes is committed to ensuring that women receive sufficient and accurate information to make informed choices on screening. Although cancer screening might offer people the benefit of early detection, it appears that the risks associated with cancer and screening are not well understood by the public. Specifically, no study has ever been conducted on how risks of breast cancer and cancer screening might be effectively communicated to minority ethnic and low income groups. The Informed Choice For All project was commissioned in 2005 to address this gap in knowledge.
The purpose of the project was to investigate, using a participatory action research approach, how the risks and benefits of breast and cervical screening programmes) are understood by health professionals and minority ethnic and low income groups, and to determine the mechanisms by which risk information can be effectively communicated to facilitate informed choice.
